Save the Iberian Orca
Mission & Approach
The Save the Iberian Orca project is dedicated to helping the Iberian Orca, a subpopulation of orca which is critically endangered. According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, there are currently less than 35 individuals left in this population.
The Iberian Orca faces many challenges such as maritime traffic, noise pollution and chemical pollution in the ocean but increasingly they are facing aggressions and attacks from recreational boaters.
Our project, launched in 2024, involves deploying a surveillance boat and team to ensure no harm comes to these animals and at same time letting recreational boaters now where to navigate to avoid any conflict at all. Our sea-based team will be on patrol surveying the orca population, preventing attacks on the orca from boaters, and helping to avoid possible interactions between boats and orca. This work is being supported by Sea Shepherd France.
In case we see any harassments towards the Iberian Orca, legal action will be pursued against the responsible persons. You can find out more about the work that we are doing in this legal area on our Attacks Against Orcas page.
